GOVERNORS ISLAND

New York City

Governors Island was once a bucolic island of nut trees prized by the native Americans who lived nearby. It has since been a Colonial fort, a coast guard station, and now it is a park open to the public. In 2007 the Governors Island Preservation and Education Corporation held a competition for the redesign of the island, to transform it from a historic site and coast guard campus into a public park. Margie Ruddick with WRT was selected as one of five international teams to compete.
